Starters

Starters or entrées can be as simple as grated carrot or celeriac or they can be scaled down versions of a main course.

When eating at a restaurant it may be possible to ask for a main dish as a starter or en entrée, although the answer will depend on the dish concerned as well as the establishment. Not everything can be adapted to make a starter, but it is one way of trying unfamiliar dishes in modest portions.
